Diseases We Detect & Manage

During a comprehensive eye exam, we’ll examine your eyes to detect signs of eye disease. We use various tests to check for various eye diseases. Some of the more common diseases we look for include glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration.

Glaucoma is categorized into a few different types, but all types are caused by increased eye pressure. Also known as ocular hypertension, this increased pressure damages your optic nerve and eventually, your vision.

If it’s caught early on, glaucoma can be treated with eye drops and surgery. We detect glaucoma using methods like NCT testing, which measures your visual field and detects the peripheral vision loss associated with glaucoma.

Cataracts happen to many of us as we age, but factors like sun exposure, diabetes, alcohol consumption, and smoking increase your risk. As we get older, the proteins in our eyes’ lenses become cloudy. Symptoms include blurry vision, dulled colors, and trouble seeing at night.

Cataracts can impair your vision as they progress, but treatment options are available. Early on, cataracts can be corrected with glasses and contacts. As cataracts progress, treatments like laser surgery may be required.

As you age, the region of the retina called the macula can degenerate. This is known as age-related macular degeneration or AMD for short. The macula is responsible for visual acuity, so some patients notice a loss of ability to see details as the disease progresses.

It’s important that AMD is diagnosed early at an annual eye exam, as it’s the leading cause of blindness in older Americans. There are two variations of the disease, dry AMD and wet AMD. Out of the two types of AMD, wet AMD is the most concerning but dry AMD is the most common. If dry AMD isn’t treated, it can progress to wet AMD, which can cause significant vision loss and blindness.
