When to Seek
Emergency Care

If you think you’re having an ocular emergency, call us right away for an emergency appointment.

D.C. Capitol Hill Location: (202)-546-2838

McLean Location: (703)-356-1292

Your eye is extremely delicate and even minor injuries could lead to infection or vision problems.

Seek Immediate Medical Attention

The following symptoms could be signs of an eye care emergency and justify an emergency appointment or a visit to the emergency room:

  • Scratched eye/cornea
  • Chemical contact
  • Foreign object in eye
  • Sudden loss of vision
  • Intense eye pain
  • Bloody or bleeding eyes
  • Significant ocular discharge
  • Significant swelling around the eye
  • Sudden onset floaters or flashes
  • Sudden onset blurry vision

Emergency Eye Care First Aid

Chemical contact, scratched corneas, and foreign objects in the eye all warrant an emergency appointment or visit to the emergency room. Before you seek emergency care, follow these first aid steps to help minimize damage to your eye.

Rinse your eye with cool, clean water for at least 15 minutes. Even if the pain subsides, it’s important to rinse your eye for the full 15 minutes, as any chemical residue can continue to cause damage. After thorough rinsing, call us for an emergency appointment. If you can, tell us what entered your eye and bring the container.

Do not put an eye patch or bandage over your eye, but keep your eye closed and do not rub your eye. Corneal scratches are not only painful, but they make the eye prone to infection as well. These steps will help prevent infection, but make sure to schedule an emergency appointment even for minor scratches.

Do not try to dislodge to object yourself. If a foreign object has entered your eye, visit us or an emergency room right away. Put a protective shield, like a paper cup, around your eye if you can. In the case of debris entering your eye, it’s also important to make an emergency appointment. Debris like metal fragments can cause scarring and damage your eyes.
